Totem poles belong to the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island's Northwest, like the Haida, Tsimshin, Kwakwala, and Tlingit. This is a piece of Indigenous culture, stolen and sold. Not only is it insulting to Indigeous peoples alive today, but also the memory of the Totem poles and other pieces of those First Nations cultures that were torn down and and declared immoral and illegal. Culture belongs to people, not the free market. When it is stolen in this way, it infringes on the rights of Indigenous artists to their vocation and livlihood. By seperating the cultural symbols of minority groups from their true meaning and significance, stereotypes and charactures are strengthened, and cultural genocide is perpetuated.
