Sumo wrestling was founded as a Shinto ritual to entertain the gods. It was believed that unhappy gods would lead to poor harvests. Almost every aspect of a sumo wrestling match is influenced by Shintoism. The sport dates to over 1,500 years ago and continues to be a national sport in Japan to this day. Sumo wrestling is enshrined with discipline, respect, and harmony, all key features to Japanese society. Wrestlers are seen as celebrities in Japan and undergo rigorous training to maintain their physique and muscle.
